Premature birth is far more common than many realise — and the care it demands, in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, is some of the most expensive in all of healthcare.
In May 2020, our son Benji arrived fifteen weeks early, at just 25 weeks of gestation. He weighed 550 grams — a fraction of the 3.7 to 4.2 kilograms an average newborn weighs. His heart was no bigger than a raspberry, and his skin was so translucent we could see straight through to the tiny organs beneath it.
Today, Benji is six. He's a bright, curious and creative little boy — obsessed with cars and Formula 1, and able to identify cars just by their headlights. He dreams of visiting Dubai and Abu Dhabi to see the supercars and the Grand Prix. He loves being creative too — drawing portraits and following in Dad's footsteps with his own dream of becoming a drummer.
We owe all of this entirely to the medical teams who cared for him around the clock — and to foundations like Running for Premature Babies, who fund the advanced neonatal equipment that gives babies like Benji the chance not just to survive, but to thrive.
In 2023, "Food for Thought" event was created and was a huge success. As a family, we are continuing our involvement with RFPB, knowing that together, we can make a difference in the lives of many more premature babies and their families.
